Champions crowned at Victorian Masters Titles presented by Coastline Advice

Jan Juc, VIC/AUS (Sunday 20th January, 2019): The 2018 Victorian Masters Titles proudly supported by Coastline Advice have been run and won in fun 2-3ft waves at Jan Juc Beach.

A whopping 7 divisions were surfed in ranging from Over 35’s to Over 60’s as well as the speciality Single Fin division. This division in particular looked to be a highlight of the event for spectators as surfers graced their way down the line on their retro equipment. The event saw some ripping talent including former world number two in the world Bradley Gerlach surf in his first Surfing Victoria event.

With the event being a pathway into the Australian Masters Titles held in August on the Tweed Coast, surfers were keen to put their best foot forward to qualify for this prestigious event.

The over 35 Men saw local Torquay surfer Johnny Hawken smash through some big sections on his backhand to get some strong scores (7.00 and a 6.90) to take the win in his respective age division. Hawken, a new member to the Masters division looked classy and smooth throughout the whole day.

“It was testing conditions out there today, but I’ve surfed Juc in these similar conditions a lot during the last month which definitely helped me today in the Over 35 division”.

“I’m stoked to be able to be heading to the Australian Masters Title up north, and I’m really looking forward to going away for it”. Hawken said.

Coming in second was Callan Cross who threw a great air reverse into the onshore afternoon winds. This air won his the day’s Air Asia Wave of the Day. In third was Tim Birnie, fourth was Joel Steven and in fifth was Mark Miccoli.

Former World Tour competitor Bradley Gerlach was a class above in the Over 50 Mens division posting a excellent 9.00 ride on his way to victory. Gerlach stylishly carved his way through the Jan Juc lineup at ease seeming to hit the rhythm that saw him be such a powerhouse on the world tour back in the late 1980’s and 1990’s. Gerlach was stoked to make three finals and get some good results.

“I haven’t been surfing much lately due to injury so it was great to get some water time and surf some heats today”. Gerlach said.

“I entered a lot of divisions today, it was really cool to just be in the water again and competing at this level”. “Competing is such a fun thing to do and I am loving life down here in Torquay”.

Coming in second was Raymond McIntosh who surfed his way to a few finals in today’s event, Stuart Engel finished in third and in fourth was Nick Demopoulous.

In the Over 40s Mens division Jan Juc’s Marcus Huppatz reigned supreme in the afternoon conditions. Huppatz was able to rip apart some left handers and get the win over some fierce competition.
Coming in second was Tim Birnie, followed by Johnny Hawken and Mark Miccoli in third and fourth.

The Over 45 Mens division saw Marcus Lens be too good for his counterparts. Lens was able to get a strong score of a 7.13 on his best wave leaving Bradley Gerlach (second), Andrew Hyde (third) and Raymond McIntosh (fourth) trailing behind.

Over 55’s Men saw local Surfcoast resident Rowan Sapwell continue his form from a strong semi final showing, into the final where he was too good for his competitors. Sapwell and local surfing legend Greg Brown trade blows throughout the final. Sapwell got the knod with his 13.50 total out of a possible 20, over Brown’s 13.00 total. Coming in third was Matthew Fisher and in fourth was Andrew Dell.

Over 60 Men saw a tremendous performance by Mark Lloyd who scored a whopping 16.80 point total which included an excellent 9.60 and a backup of a 7.20. Lloyd’s 9.60 was the highest scoring wave of the day. Coming in second was Joe Cervi, third was Alan Bounds, Kim Shannon finished in fourth.

The Single Fin division was a much awaited final with all surfers getting many opportunities to showcase their best retro surfing. Getting the win was Marcus Huppatz followed by Bradley Gerlach, Mark Walker and Mark Miccoli who finished in second, third and fourth respectively.

The last division to grace the lineup was the Over 35 Women. The only female division of the day didn’t disappoint with all ladies surfing well in the afternoon seabreeze conditions. Clare Eldridge surfed remarkably getting the win over Kim Byrne who finished in second, former Masters champion Angie Reiter finished in third, followed by Eglantine Balland in fourth and Nerissa Hede in fifth.
